Yes, I’m allowed to have a favourite, and it’s my eleven-year-old cat, Audrey!
Why is she so amazing to have around when I’m working?
For starters, she is a very calming influence. She mostly just sits at my feet or finds a cosy nook to curl up for a nap. She never has a bad day and never demands too much of me.
Having Audrey around means I have someone to talk to and for an extrovert like me, that is very important! I thought I might get lonely now that I am mostly working from home, but she is excellent company. She is a great listener, and never disagrees with me.
Audrey also reminds me that it is important to take regular breaks. She enjoys getting some attention every now and then, so it’s important to down tools a couple of times a day to give her a cuddle. I also like that I have a friend to have lunch with every day. She can be in the deepest sleep and will hear the fridge door open from four rooms away. We have an agreement that I always share my lunch.
Studies have shown that having pets in the workplace helps to relieve stress and improve productivity – I guess that makes sense as stress is so counter-productive! I’m so happy working in a pet-friendly environment - it is one of the many perks of working from home. I’m sure that having Audrey around makes me more calm and effective in my work. It also makes me happy every day.
