September has been a record month for CPS which has been somewhat unexpected. With time being one of my highest values, I'm usually a master at working effectively, but this month I started to hit a stage of overwhelm.
I found myself writing lists and lists of "important" tasks to be done and at the end of the day feeling frustrated when the list only got longer. Until, by chance I happened to run in to my closest friend one day, at my local coffee shop when I was hitting my peak stressed state and she simply said "you're choosing this".
My initial reaction was to flip the table in rage and sacrifice another comforting flat white but on second thought, she was right.
Every single moment in our lives happens because of our choices. "But what if someone was holding a gun to my head?" I'm glad you asked. You could run away, you could try to negotiate, you could give them your wallet etc
You are tired because you chose not to go to bed earlier, you have no time yet you choose to watch TV for hours on end each night, you are stressed out because you choose to say "yes" rather than "no" to more work. I was stressed and overwhelmed all because of my choice and once that was recognised, I took the power back and started making better decisions.
If you always seem to have a jam packed week and all it creates is stress, make the right decisions to address this. Choose to say 'no' to more work, choose to organise your day and prioritise your tasks. But, more than anything, acknowledge that you are in full control and stressing about something is probably the most counter productive thing you could choose.
